help installing postgreSQL

Postby mathman1115 » Tue Jun 09, 2009 11:12 pm

I am currently using the trial version of PT3. About 20 days into the trial, i ran some antispyware/antimalware software to clean my computer. After, i opened PT3 and it ran but it would not recognize my database. I backed up all my hh and followed a tutorial for uninstalling/reinstalling postgreSQL but it would still not recognize anything. So i uninstalled PT3 and decided to start from scratch.

At first, i'd reinstall PT3, have PT3 install postgreSQL, and just before installation was complete, when it got to "starting service", a message would pop up saying that postgres.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. Eventually, that led to rolling back the installation and PT3 would not run due to postreSQL not being installed. I must have done this about 10-15 times, deleting all traces of PT3 and postgreSQL and trying again, but the same thing kept happening.

Next, i would install PT3 and then try to install postgreSQL from the site. Upon doing that, postgreSQL seemed to install ok a couple of times, but then when i open PT3 a little window pops up 'Configure postgreSQL Server' with the password field blank. I've tried every password under the sun, including defaults and personal passowords, and nothing works. I just get a message saying 'Unable to connect to database: please check configuration' Eventually i cancel and then PT3 won't run without postgreSQL

Even worse, now if i unistall everything and try again, after installing PT3 that little window pops up all the time now. It doesn't even give me an option to install postreSQL.

Any ideas? Do i have an undeleted database? what is with the postgres.exe encountering a problem window? Is the fact i'm using the trial version related (i still have 31 days left in my trial) Help!

BTW, all antivirus and firewalls are disabled.

I did a search on this forum and have seen similar problems, but i'm not seeing a fix. When i could, the start services option wouldn't work either.

Please reinstall PostgreSQL as explained in this tutorial and that should reattach to your current data directory (assuming you did not delete it and it sounds like you didn't).

If that doesn't work, please create a support ticket using this link and we'll help you get things resolved.

I did attempt to reinstall postgresql using that tutorial several times and it didn't work. I'm not so sure i didn't delete my data directory either (is that program files -> PostgreSQL?) I deleted that folder originally and every other time i tried the install.

I did submit a ticket to support. Thank you.

Yes, your database is in the PostgreSQL directory by default.

Either way, we'll make sure you get things figured out in your support ticket.

This is a bump.

I had two remote sessions a while back with no solution. I was told that a group policy was preventing postgreSQL from starting services but this makes no sense. The administrator of my building says i have full admin rights on my computer. I went into gpedit and enabled everything that looked important. I've disabled my firewall and uninstalled or disabled every anti virus/malware/adware/spyware tool i have, and i still get the same error message:

postgres.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.

and then eventually i get some message saying posgresSQL 8.3 was unable to start. Please be sure you have sufficient privilege to start services.

I saw a similar thread in this section viewtopic.php?f=17&t=18422
where someone was getting that same message. I am on a domain from work, but had postgreSQL and PT3 running fine a month ago. Problem started after running antispyware software.

I also get an error message similar to what is in this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=17&t=19981

I contacted support again a week ago but got no response. There has to be some other solution here.

What is your ticket number? I'll check that it's in the right place - that will be the best way to get this resolved.

Ticket #60546

My original session was with kraada.

My 2nd session was with APerfect10, which was the session where it was determined the group policy was causing the problem.

The last update in that ticket was the request to join the remote session, which I guess you did.
If you have follow up information or questions from the session please reply to the same ticket - you can access it from My Tickets.

ok, i sent an email directly through the my tickets link.

The other one i sent was separate, so its possible it just got lost in the mix.

Thank you.

Hi there,

Same problem as mathman1115: Please be sure you have sufficient privilege to start services.
If anyone has a solution, please share it. I've done everything asked as to uninstalling the database, re-installing... nothing works.
Not really excited about removing my anti-virus but if that's the problem, then... But is it really the problem ?
Does anyone know for sure ?

Regards,

BB
