Hosting Company hosting my postgres db?

Postby mjr161 » Mon Mar 07, 2011 3:42 pm

I've noticed some hosting companies offer postgres hosting through their cpanel (hostmonster.com for example).

Has anyone ever tried hosting their dbs off site at a hosting company like this? I can imagine not having to run postgres locally could be a decent performance boost, and well worth the $5/mo it costs.

It'll actually be a lot slower than you expect to do that way - the latency by using an internet connection is going to be nontrivial.

Even at extreme internet speeds? My home connection is 150MB/35MB (FIOS)

I suppose I'm more concerned about machine lag than anything else honestly. That and I currently access PT from two locations simultaneously (mac os and a winxp vm for sites with no mac clients), and I thought it would simplify networking the db.

So I've been told. You're welcome to try it, and it will definitely work for things like reports, but for things like cache updates and the HUD you may experience some issues relating to the latency.

Hey there,

i use it for months on my custom server with an online Database. The latency is NOT a problem. Maybe it is slower than having the Database run on the local PC but for me the advantages are much bigger then the little loss of speed.

Is there a company specialized for Pokertracker Postgres Databases?

would it be interesting to have one?
Do you really think the latency is the biggest problem for the most people?

If it's something you're interested in starting, I wish you much luck. I would recommend stress testing your setup before offering the service to customers - but as long as you're happy with the results, odds are good they will be too.

Jeah, actually i'm starting planing. I contacted a professional Hosting Company to calculate the workload.

My main problem will be to recruit people for the beta test (which will be of course free). Would you mind if i ask here in the forum?

You can ask here in the forums as long as you follow these rules:

(1) You can't use the PT forums as a method of marketing or conducting business. You can look for beta testers, but if you reach the stage where you start charging, you can't continue to advertise or discuss it here in the forums once you've gotten out of the beta phase.

and

(2) You cannot allow the co-mingling or reselling/reuse of data - this is against the terms of service of every major site and we cannot condone any actions that would breach terms of service in that manner.
