CPU crushed and problems re-installing

Postby GreetUrDs » Mon Jul 04, 2011 2:58 pm

Hello,

A lightning stroke nearby my house and destroyed my old Vista-CPU . I still managed to recover old hard drive (in which PT3 and PostgreSQL were installed) and it is now an external usb-hard drive. The question is; what do I have to do to get my old database and PT working on my new CPU (which has Windows 7 btw).

So far I have tried installing PostgreSQL and copying the old data-folder from external hard drive to new CPU Program Files\PostgreSQL, but when I try to launch it says unable to "connect database". Apparently the installation of Postgre has not been completed properly as I can't find it running in Task Manager--> Processes. I have tried to start it also manually.

I'm helpless, thanks in advance for any help

It may depend what state the database was in when your old computer was destroyed - it's possible that some data could be lost, although it could well be OK.
Copying the data folder across should work, but I think you will need to install PostgreSQL with the data folder in place. Also be sure to install the same major version (8.3 or 8.4, for example) that you had before. Try uninstalling and reinstalling PostgreSQL as described in the appropriate guide in the Documentation, with the data folder already in place before you reinstall. The guide explains how to keep existing databases intact.

If that doesn't work you may need to re-import - do you still have the original hand history files from the old disk too?

I downloaded the version 8.3.15, does that version support Windows 7 64bit?

I have successfully uninstalled (as instructed in the documentation) postgreSQL and re-installation went fine as well. (I left the old data-folder to program files\postgreSQL... is that how I should do?) The installation was completed fine but I still cannot start it. It cannot be found in processes nor can I start it manually from "services.msc". It says (roughly translated) "The service Postgre SQL Database Server 8.3 in local computer could not be started. Error 1024; The service did not respond to start- and control request in time."

I also noticed there are 3 (postgres, postgres.MIKE-PC and postgres.MIKE-PC.000) -folders in my Users-folder? The content of these are the default as with any normal Windows user. (Desktop, my documents, downloads, favourites etc. ) Could these be deleted somehow? Typing three times the "net user postgre /delete"?

I suppose I have the old handhistory files as the hard drive seems to be fine. Can they all be found in PT3 processed (there is 2,26Gt of them) folder? If I do that, I suppose I'd still have to get postgreSQL running as I can't even start PT3 now without it.

Thanks

8.3.15 will work on 64-bit systems, but only v9 has a native 64-bit version. If you want to use your existing database you NEED to install the same major version as you were using before, though. You could upgrade after you connected to the old database using the original version.
However, if you have the original hand histories you will probably find it easier to install the 64-bit v9 and re-import them.

If uninstalling PostgreSQL as per the guide doesn't work correctly please create a Support ticket and one of our support technicians will work with you to get things sorted out.

I managed to get it working. Previosly I had been letting the PostgreSQL installation to create the PostgreSQL\data -folders and after the installation I had replaced the data folder with the old data-folder. That didn't work. I manually created before installation PostgreSQL-folder and data-folder in Program files and added the old data folder there before the installation. The outcome looks exactly like with previous method but this way it works.

Thanks for your help!
