Database Crash

Postby ApeironD » Fri Dec 23, 2011 6:09 pm

Running 3.11.7.0 beta. First ever PT3 crash (or PostgerSQL 9.1). I was running a report at the time of the crash. Logging was enabled but there is not a log for today’s date. After the crash the following occurs when I run PT3. Opening PT3 sends me to “Configure PostgreSQL Database” for the option to cerate a new database. If I try to “Browse Databases” I get the following error message: “Unable to login to database (template 1). Reason: FATAL: the database system is in recovery mode”. Likewise, when I try to login to the database via pgAdmin III I get a similar message: “Error connecting to server: FATAL: the database system is in recovery mode

Any hope here that the database can be recovered? Is recovery an automatic PostgerSQL response to a crash or must one initiate recovery from the WAL’s?

Postgres 9.1 has known data crash and corruption issues. You should not use it with PT3. Version 9.0 however is safe to use and well tested with both PT3 and PT4.

Nevertheless, is there a Postgres 9.1 database recovery process? It appears such options exist. So, I could possibly recover and connect to the Postgres 9.1 database (recovered) and create a new PT3 backup. Next go back to the more PT3 robust Postgres 9.0 and reload the "latest" PT3 backup. [Unfortunately, my last and only PT3 backup was mid sept.] Comments?

As best I could tell stopping the server and restarting it would cause the database auto-recovery function to execute. When I tried to stop the server from paAdmin III it hung in a mode of "stopping server". Finally, in despartion I restarted the whole system. Sever is up and running and the database recovered. I think I'll now make a PT3 backup. :)

Backup/Restore should allow you to transfer your database to an older version, although it is possible something in 9.1 databases may not transfer backwards properly. I'd expect it to be OK, but I would suggest that you make sure you have your hand histories (either the originals in the PokerTracker 3\Processed folder or from an export) as well, just in case you need to re-import to a new database.
