Optimal Hard Drive Setup For PT3/PT4

Postby daniel07 » Thu Feb 02, 2012 9:44 am

Hi,

This question is mainly for PT4, but i guess it also applies to PT3.

I have a SSD 30GB drive and a standard 600GB internal 7200rpm (I think) HardDrive.
My OS will be installed on the 30GB SSD, so lets say I will have 20GB free for PokerTracker/PostgreSQL.

What is the best way to setup PokerTracker and my poker sites to get the best performance?

Does it make a big difference installing the database on the SSD?

if I choose to install on the SSD.
How many hands can I import before the 20GB is full?
Am I able to split my databases, so that for example all hands older than 6 months are stored on the 600GB driver and all new hands are stored on the 30GB SSD.

Also, if I was going to buy a brand new system.. you can give me any requirements, what should i buy for the best Hard Drive setup.

Thanks.

You will get a faster response on the SSD - reading and writing times are much faster there. In terms of size, 10G is about 1M hands for PT3 if you're using full ring hands - 6G for 1M hands if you're playing 6max.

Yes, you can set that up by creating a tablespace - see this thread for more on that kind of configuration.

Is installing PostgreSQL 9.0 & database in a space-limited SSD the most important? What's next:

1) Install PokerTracker 4 next in SSD, including /Processed folder, logs and all other files? Which big files/folders can be moved to the slower HD if necessary?
2) Install poker site software next in SSD?
3) Install other poker-related software in SSD.
4) Is all other software the least important for a system mainly used for poker?

I think I averaged around 15 GB/year with PT3, so would it be a good idea to buy an SSD bigger than 120 GB?

PostgreSQL is the most hard drive intensive part of PokerTracker - the Processed folder for example can be on a regular hard drive without any problem, we don't read anything from there once it's there. The actual program installation would benefit from the SSD as would any other program but I don't know off the top of my head exactly how big that benefit would be. I've heard though that running your main OS on an SSD is a really nice experience so if you can do that, you would probably appreciate the improvement.
