Hey,
I've read a lot of posts about the tuning/re-installing postgreSQL/using 2HDD,....
But i was wondering if it matters in what order it is done.
I did this:
1)Create table space to my newest and fastest Hard drive (I:\)
2) deleted postgreSQL, and downloaded 8.3.8 and did the tuning thingy. I installed it on the "C" drive! because i understand that the tablespace does the work of transferring data from "C" to "I". at least thats what i understood from all the computer language :-)
I am exporting my database so i can import them again on my "I" drive. Not my "C"drive.
Not sure if this is the best way to do it? any advice? after that is imported i plan to do housekeeping. (last week it lasted 23 hours.) (1.2 million hands) or is it not necessary?
Can i delete the data on my "C"drive afterwards? and which folder is it that i should empty?
Any help will be appreciated. I am stunned I already got this far without questions ;-)
Hoping for a reply soon ;-)

So you have re-installed postgres and have it connected to your existing databases on c:, is that right?
If you have exported your hands from that database and created a new database on the I: drive with a tablespace then you should be good to import to it.
The other way you could do it is to backup your orignal database then restore it into the new tablespace, but the hand import should work just fine.
Once you've imported to the new database you should run housekeeping - this is really important for better performance in PT3.

If you get stuck with something please tell us exactly where you're up to, and what you're trying to do next.

Hi
I still have not installed PT3 or postgre on my new PC and have not imported hands.
Is there an easier way to make postgre store its files on the second drive?

Ah, OK - if you're starting from scratch on a new computer then you should just be able to follow Kraada's directions from the start of the thread.
Once you have created the database on the other drive then postgres will manage the files and you can just use PT3 as normal.

hey,
i re-installed the postgres and connected it with my C drive and the tablespace worked fine also. I imported everything in my new database on I: drive.
and i did housekeeping.
The manual import works fine; havent played, but i guess normal auto-import will work too.
I just don't understand the other method. backup original database and restore it. I just don't know how to do that :-) is it faster?
I have 1 big question left!
I want to delete the old database. wich folder is it that i need to empty?
I only did the cashgame hands. my tournament hands are still in the old database. i guess it is a pain to request about 1000 tournament histories on pokerstars.
or is it possible to only delete the cashgame HH wich i now have double. and leave the tournaments in the old database?

Now that you have created a new database and imported to it you don't need to do that.

This is on your old computer, is it?
Are you still able to run that as normal, or do you just have the hard disk?
If you can run it you can still manage the databases (including deleting them) via PT3.

If you can still use your old computer you can export the tournaments and their summaries, then import them to your new computer.

Alternatively, you could do a backup of the whole database on your old computer, copy the backup file to the new computer and restore that.

I understand that i don't have to backup things.
but i was wondering how to do it anyway. if it is faster, i deffinately want to know ;-)
I still have the same computer!!
But my C: drive is an old slow one. so i used tablespace so that it uses my I: drive which is way faster and more free disk space.
PostgreSQL is still installed on my C: drive !
I tried activating the old database in PT3, and it works just fine.

I am trying the export for tourney hands and then reimporting in new DB. is this the correct way?

How do i do a backup of the whole database? (cash+tourneys)
Thanks all for the great support! you rock!

So long as you have the tablespace set up properly, PostgreSQL stays installed on the C drive, but all of the data PostgreSQL accesses is on your I drive. That splits the load and is what gives you your performance boosts.

To backup your database in Beta 29.1, click Database --> Database Management --> Backup.

It worked perfectly.
But i have no "BACKUP" button in the database management in pt3
i have : NEW/EDIT/SET DEFAULT/PURGE/HOUSEKEEPING/REMOVE/DELETE/SET ACTIVE/EXPORT/CLOSE buttons.

but my main question now that i have all my data in my new db.
how do i delete the old one? do i have to do it in my C: drive by deleting some folders? or do i go to database management in pt3 and select the old database and then use the Delete button? or should it be the remove button? what is the difference?

I guess these are my last questions. so thanks a lot for the great support.

The backup button is only there in Beta 29.1, you need to upgrade to that version from our download page, then you will see that button there.

Once you have a new database on the new tablespace with all of your hands imported, you want to delete your old database, not just remove it.

Delete actually deletes the PostgreSQL database, remove just removes it from the PT3 configurations.
