With so much free time, I have been messing around with this to optimize my database for my system (I have been using your top config with great results)

My rig: i7-2600k overclocked to 4GHz, 16 GB of DDR3 RAM no overclock, OCZ Vertex SSD

The hands are all at 400PLO -1000PLO; I think the game matters since most hands see flops and these affects import times)

512MB shared buffers
128MB work_mem
512MB maintenance_work_mem
2048MB effective cache size
8MB wal_buffers
24MB temp_buffers

Hands Imported 525490
Time 14:48
Hands/second 591.77 h/s

1024MB shared buffers

Hands Imported 525490

Hands/second SLOWER

So far your config wins... I'm just getting started though. Any recs based on my rig?

Does it matter if I'm using postgresql 8 (the one that came with the pt3 download) and I'm importing from my primary drive? My desktop is only for poker so I keep all poker stuff on the ssd; I read that importing from a secondary drive would be faster.

Finally, how do I impact read speeds; HUD updates, report loadings, etc....

Upgrading to 9.0 will help you with that setup perhaps even more than further configuration file tinkering.

Hi kes1981,

Great results. Since I'm a cheap bastard and have been using AMD vs. Intel CPUs for cost considerations for a while,
I can't really tell you anything specific in regard to your rig. However, at close to 600H/s you're doing just fine, and
importing 1/2 million hands in under 15 minutes is nothing to sneeze at. It also looks like finally going from 8GB to
16GB RAM might do me some good. I definetly agree with kraada, that moving to the 64-bit version of PostgreSOL
will probably do far more for you than any further tinkering with the configs will. I've been using it for about 4 months
now without any issues; its stable and seems to have improved overall performance slightly (5-10%). So if you are running
a 64-bit version of windows, going to 9.0 would be your best move.

The most important thing left for all of us here in the US to do at this point is to exert whatever influence (i.e. phonecalls & emails)
we can to get our so-called representatives in congress to move on the legislation proposed on March 18, 2011. Meanwhile its time to
squeeze out some lunch money, a couple of bucks at a time, from the local yokels at the B&M around the corner.

PS: Which data provider do you use? (Based on your import speeds their files seem to be in better order than other's.)

That will definitely slow things down - if you're hard core enough you could try writing a script to reorder the hands so that all of the hands from the same table are together.

But we do really appreciate hearing the results of all of these tests, so definitely keep following up here.

Not a power user; just a poker player with way too much free time.

I finished my first run with the first setting with the same HH batch I used in my prior post and DAMN: 705.8 h/s

I have no clue if it's PostgreSQL 9 or the overclock to 4.4, but I'll take it. I even had HEM importing at 260 h/s!!!!!
