Problem with installing PostgreSQL

I am getting the error message when installing PostgreSQL as follows:

"Problem running post-install setup. Installation may not complete correctly
The database cluster initiation failed"

I am using Vista but have changed all User Access settings etc and am running the program as an administrator.

Have uninstalled and reinstalled postgreSQL completely as shown in the guides, but am still having the same problem.

Would greatly appreciate any advice on how to fix this problem.

Try unchecking the "Initialize Database" checkbox when reinstalling and see if that gets it to finish for you.

Ok thanks I did that and it all got installed.

I went to task manager to see if Postgres was running and there is no postgres.exe showing, even when showing processes from all users.

Is that something to do with me unchecking Initialise Database? And if so what do I have to do to get it working?

Edit: just went start programs postgres start service and it doesnt look like it wants to start...

What happens when it tries to start? Does it hang then close eventually but no Postgres processes appear?

What firewall are you running? Could you check in Event Viewer (Start --> Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Event Viewer --> Applications) and look for errors relating to PostgreSQL? If you find any could you paste the contents of the error messages here, please?

Yea, when I press start service, the C:/ start service box pops up, says The Postgre database is starting, gets infinite . . . . . .'s then closes and no Postgres processes appear as you described.

I did that event viewer thing and got these errors:

postgres cannot access the server configuration file "C:/Program Files/PostgreSQL/8.3/data/postgresql.conf": No such file or directory

Got this 1 second after the Postgres error which may be related also:

Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards.

Hope that helps, thanks.

Windows firewall, but I've added Postgres to the programmes allowed to run through...
