If it was working in the past, but now it does not, restart postgresql by going to start -> programs -> postgresql -> stop service, then go back there and click on start service. Does this fix it?

I have same problem just now. I tried 2 merge my aliases together while I was playing & importing which probably wasn't the best idea. Anyway it crashed my Laptop, had 2 manuay shut it down & restart & now it wont show me my database or import hands . I tried the stop Postgrespl, start Postgresql but that seems to have no effect.

If PostgreSQL does not start properly when doing that, go Start --> Find Files/Folders and search all types of files for a file named postmaster.pid. Once you find that file, delete it, then attempt to restart PostgreSQL as above, and it will hopefully start properly.

look in the windows system/application event logs and post any errors pertainent to this failure...
launch pgadmin, connect to the db, File>Options>Logging>Debug, start PT, wait for the error, kill the process & post the written log...
