Error 1053 POSTGRESQL Could not start in a timely fashion

Postby carpmentor » Sat Jul 25, 2009 2:42 pm

Just unistalled and reinstalled PostGre. Now I cannot get it to start. It does not start by itself and I have tried to manually start, but it times out.

Did you fully uninstall it before re-installing, as described in the How to reinstall Postgres guide?

Are you using Vista?
Do you have it configured to run as administrator?

I'd suggest disabling 'User Account Control' (UAC) (if you're using Vista) and going through the steps in the linked guide again carefully to make sure you have everything uninstalled/reinstalled properly - if you still have problems after that you can attach the last couple of log files from "C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.3\data\pg_log" to a Support ticket so that we can investigate.

I followed how to unistall and reinstall from the tutorial. I did it twice thinking I messed up the first time.

I am the administrator on this computer and am running Windows XP.

for some reason I still have a folder for 8.2 and the logs are in there. I do not have any logs in the 8.3 folder.

Did you previously have 8.2, and now you've installed 8.3?
If so, then you mustn't have fully uninstalled or you wouldn't have an 8.2 folder any more.

It sounds like something is still configured to run the 8.2 service.
When you go Start > Programs > Postgres do you have Postgres 8.2 and Postgres 8.3?
Are you trying to start 8.2 or 8.3?

When you uninstalled, did everything complete OK, or did you get any errors?

I had 8.2 a long time ago. I had 8.3 running up until a couple of weeks ago and then I started getting this trouble. I uninstalled the 8.3 and reinstalled without any issues and followed the guide to the tee. 8.2 is not listed in my start>program or in my add/remove programs. I go to c drive>program files>Postgresql and then when I open that folder I have the choice of an '8.2' and '8.3' file.

What firewall do you use? Did you update it?
Some firewalls prevent postgres starting - this is less likely since you've been running OK previously but still possible if the firewall updated itself. Try disabling it temporarily while you start PT3.

If postgres still won't start have a look at Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer for any errors - attach a screenshot to a Support ticket if you don't know what you're looking for.
