Moving PostgreSQL Database over to a new computer

Postby dtools22 » Mon Jan 18, 2010 2:07 pm

I'm running PT3 version 3.00 build 5.2. I just bought a new computer and I'd like to move my database files over to it. I found the instructions on the website and they say the following:

1.Open the Utilities/PostgreSQL Database Functions window.
2.Click the "Backup" button to create a compressed backup file of the selected PostgreSQL database. If you have more than one database, then you must choose each PostgreSQL database from the dropdown list at the top left corner of the window and perform the backup for EACH database. The backup being done is only for the selected database and NOT for all your databases. So if you have created 3 PostgreSQL databases, you need to perform the backup function 3 times, once for each database.

Now this is probably just me missing something but I can't seem to find the window step 1 is referring to. Does anyone know what this is talking about?

The backup and restore functions were added after Build 5.2.

You have options:

1. To stay with Build 5.2 you will need to backup and restore your databases manually - see the Database / PostgreSQL FAQ for directions.
See also: PT3 Backup Files.

2. Update to Beta 29.1 and follow the directions you have.

3. Update to Beta 30.1 which has a new Backup/Restore mechanism which will store all of your databases and config files in a single backup file.
This is the easiest method, but Beta 30.1 introduces some major new features and changes and has a few teething problems so you may prefer to wait for the next release which will have many of these issues fixed.
