SSD, HDD setup

Postby Eu.Era » Mon Feb 06, 2012 8:26 am

Hi there, i have a 40GB SSD (cant hold very much). Im constantly left with less the 1GB on it so i need to find a better option.
Could i add a 1tb barracuda hdd to my setup and put my database on there (and my media). If i did this would i notice a reduction in poker tracker performance and also if i used a setup like this would i be able to use the autoimport feature in poker tracker and import HH in real time or could i only do it manualy like once a week or something.

If that is the case i could shell out for another SSD drive. If i had to do this would it be better to buy a 120gb ssd and store my OS programs and database on it and media on my HDD or could i buy a cheaper 40gb ssd, store my OS and programs on 1 ssd, my database on the other and my media on the hdd.

If you have a separate drive with only your databases on it that will give optimum performance (as nothing else would be accessing the drive, meaning that PostgreSQL gets its data as fast as possible). You would get better performance if that extra drive were an SSD, but a good HDD will give decent performance too, so unless you have a huge database you may not notice too much difference. That said, I don't have any personal experience with SSDs and we have had some posts in these forums saying that performance has been increased significantly. The choice comes down to a combination of database size (so need for speed and size of disk) and price (as usual!).
If you search for SSD in these forums you'll find plenty of discussion about people's setups.

Either way, you should be able to run auto import - that should always be able to keep up with the hands you're playing as long as it is started when you start playing and doesn't have a big backlog of old hand histories to import. (Tutorial: Preventing Duplicates)
