Mac OS X Lion Server, can't connect PT3 to Postgresql

Postby bender » Wed Feb 15, 2012 3:21 pm

I purchased new mac mini with Mac OS X Lion Server installed (not just Lion, but Lion Server). It has Postgresql 9.0.5 installed. It's used buy OS, I think, so I can't really mess with it too much.
I followed instructions here http://www.mactasia.co.uk/revisited-using-postgresql-in-lion-server and I can connect to it from pgAdmin. Unusual thing is, pgAdmin accepts any password at all, including blank. I also tried different random (non-existent) usernames, but only "_postgres" (with underscore) works.
I installed PT3. Every time I run it it asks me to install Postgresql. I refuse. Then it asks me to connect to existing Postgresql. This fails with error message : "Unable to connect to this database. Please check the configuration". I tried all kind of passwords including blank and my OS X password.
I looked at PostgreSQL.log and it adds messages when I connect to Postgresql server from pgAdmin, but when I attempt to connect from PT3 it doesn't add any new messages there.
I initially tried to set up PT3 a couple of months ago, so I could forget something I did.

Please help.

This is status of postgresql:
mini:~ edik$ sudo serveradmin fullstatus postgres
Password:
postgres:dataDirHasBeenInitialized = yes
postgres:PG_VERSION = "9.0.5"
postgres:dataDir = "/var/pgsql"
postgres:postgresIsResponding = yes
postgres:dataDirIsDirectory = yes
postgres:PGserverVersion = 90005
postgres:dataDirExists = yes
postgres:setStateVersion = 1
postgres:state = "RUNNING"

Hold option and click on PokerTracker to start it with Logging Enabled, then check the PokerTracker.log file (it's in ~/Documents/PokerTracker/) and let me know what error message you receive there - that should give us more information as to what is going wrong here.

Could you paste the contents of /Library/PostgreSQL/9.0/data/pg_hba.conf here for me please? I suspect the configuration there may be causing us some trouble. You might be able to get around this using your local IP address in the host box (e.g. 192.168.1.100 or whatever your local IP is - you can find it through running ifconfig in the terminal) but I'd like to see what the default setup is so that if something needs changing at least we know what it is for the future.

I didn't find the file where you specified it, but I found one in /private/var/pgsql/pg_hba.conf
Here it is:

# TYPE DATABASE USER CIDR-ADDRESS METHOD

# "local" is for Unix domain socket connections only
local all all trust
# IPv4 local connections:
host all all 127.0.0.1/32 trust
# IPv6 local connections:
host all all ::1/128 trust

I tried a few IPs. They all failed with different errors:

Try using 127.0.0.1 and see if that works better for you.

127.0.0.1 gives the same error:

2012/02/16 23:26:52.733: [- Main -][PostgresConnection] Connecting to database: template1
2012/02/16 23:26:52.733: [- Main -][PostgresConnection (Error)] Unable to login to database (template1). Reason: could not connect to server: No such file or directory Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432"?

PT3 still wants to install Postgresql every time I start it (I refused every time). This may mean something.

This is very odd. Please create a support ticket using our system requesting remote assistance and link to this thread and we'll take care of you. This will be much easier to troubleshoot when connected directly to the machine.
