When I open Task Manager I see 6 copies of postgres running varying in size from 5232k to 37048k.
When I start PT3 the copies jump to 10 !!
Is this correct or do I have a problem?
I am using XPsp3, PG 8.3 - postrgres service is set to "automatic"

This is normal and expected behavior - each instance is a different connection. PostgreSQL uses multiple connections to better manage the database and that number is normal, you do not need to worry about this at all.
