Hello I deleted postgres off the desktop and my start bar. When I went onto the c drive to delete the remainder off the program files I clicked the folder and pressed delete but not all the files inside were deleted. I get this message when I try to delete these awkward files:

http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/5995/portsxt1.jpg

Anyway for good measure I deleted the usernames using the run function and re-installed but when I get to the port number bit of the installation of postgres it tells me that the default port number is already in use. So either those awkward files that won't delete are to blame or it's something else. I have run task manager to see what else is running but nothing should be interfering with the deletion of those files.

What does that mean? I deleted all the postgres files except the files that won't delete, is there some specific command I need to do?

I've just ran an advanced search on my pc for "Postgres3" and nothing comes up so I can assume it has been deleted?

reboot and try deleting that folder again. You MUST get that entire folder deleted before trying to install. If it still won't delete after a reboot then I suspect that you actually have a version of postgres running as a service. You'' need to stop that service to get the folder deleted - and you'll also have to remove the service from the registry. I could tell you how to do this under XP. Vista may be somewhat different.

from the run box:
services.msc (you'll almost certainly need to run this as an administrator).

In the list of services find Postgres (the actual name will be somewhat longer, include version etc).
Double-click (or right-click|properties)
Stop the service (general tab)
Disable the service (startup type drop down, general tab)
make a note of the service name (as opposed to the display name) - top of the general tab
exit out

You should now be able to delete the folder. If not then reboot and try again.

Next you have to remove the actual service entries. Try this:
as admin, from a command promp (servicename is the one you noted above):
sc delete <servicename>.

make sure that all users are deleted (net user command)

now you should be able to re-install.

Check to make sure you don't have the service entries either way.

net user postgres3 /delete from the command prompt as an administrator BEFORE you re-install.

Good news guys, I got PT3 working again!

The two crucial things were doing the services.misc from the run box and getting rid of the Postgres3 user via the run command box. Thanks for your help!

Now, the only thing I need to do is recover the hands from my database. I presume I have to email Poker Stars for my hands? Luckily it's only hands since the beginning of this month.

Did you delete the hands you had imported from the 'move processed files to' folder?
Have a look, they may still be there - if so, manual import from there.
If not, yes, request them from stars and save then manual import the results.
