Networked Postgres through Internet: Bandwidth/speed issues?

Postby stevens465 » Fri Sep 12, 2008 3:19 am

Hello,

I'm getting ready to setup Postgres on my desktop to have a centralized database so that my laptop can access it as well. As far as I know this is fine in a LAN setting, but what if I'm away from home on my laptop? Quick question:

1.) If I'm able to VPN into my home network (therefore accssing the Postgres server on the desktop), will bandwidth requirements be an issue if I'm on a semi-slow link such as a public Wifi? I'm concerned about the speed at which PT3 can retrieve and display information on the client side.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has tried this so that it can save me some time, thanks!'

p.s My database has about 300k hands in it, if that matters.

Sometimes I used PT2 with a VPN connection into my home network. It worked but sometimes really slow. But it worked. Now with PT3 it works much faster. Thats all I can say. Mostly I use the VPN for playing (Auto Import + HUD). Very rarely I browse in the tracker but that also runs very good. Just give it a try I think. Few words about bandwidth... I think more importand than bandwidth will be delay times. If you have Pings of <150ms then I think it will run acceptable. At home I have DSL with 4500/400k and at work where I sometimes play with my notebook there is a 2Mbit SDSL so effective bandwidth ist 2000/400 at maximum. This works good.
