PostgreSQL service trying to connect to internet

Postby shbon » Wed Dec 03, 2008 7:16 pm

Hi
For some reason, when I launched PT3 today, my PostgreSQL service is asking to connect to the internet. AFAIK it's never done that before!
This is being caught by my firewall (Zonealarm) which reports: pg_ctl.exe is asking to connect to 209.235.196.110.
Whois says that's res.poker-fw01.inetu.net, Allentown, PA 18109

I've had PT3 running fine on this (Vista) computer for months and I'm not sure what if anything has changed?

Any idea what going on here?

Thanks
Shaun

I don't think postgres should be trying to connect outside your computer - I would run a full scan..
I'll see if I can get someone else to look at this too.

Thanks Whiterider

I'd already run full scans (Avast, Spybot, Windows Defender) but nothing was found...
I do have a problem with my PC - it's booting up very slowly the last few days and Windows Security center keeps reporting Zone alarm is not turned on, when it clearly is! So, something is going on... and I might need to reset my machine...

Even so, I'm interested to know why postgre service is asking for that particular IP, which appears to have poker in the domain name!
Where is it getting that config information from?

Additional diagnostics:

the last lines from my postgre log:
2008-11-30 14:23:39 GMT LOG: test message did not get through on socket for statistics collector
2008-11-30 14:23:39 GMT LOG: trying another address for the statistics collector

2008-11-30 15:12:37 GMT LOG: terminating any other active server processes
2008-11-30 15:12:43 GMT LOG: abnormal database system shutdown

After that date, any initation of postgre service produced the following error in the eventviewer:
GMT FATAL: could not open directory "pg_tblspc": No such file or directory

(although, this may be an effect of denying internet access to the service??)

Thanks

I think what you're seeing are two different things that go on at pretty much the same time when PT3 starts up.

First, PokerTracker 3 connects to our registration server to verify that your copy of PT3 is registered. I think the IP address you've mentioned is that of our registration server.

At the same time, PT3 connects to the PostgreSQL database. The database doesn't need to be shared to the outside world, but it does need access to port 5432 on your machine so that you can internally connect to it.

So what you're seeing is (a) A connection to our registration server at the same time that (b) PostgreSQL requests its data port, and you are assuming that one is because of the other, and they shouldn't be. They just happen at the same time when you start up PT3.

Does that clear things up for you?

kraada is 100% correct.

I've heard of this ZoneAlarm issue before where it says that one program is accessing an IP address even though it was a completely different program/process.
