Just download and install the "PT3 with postgres" version and it will set it all up for you.
If you are using Vista, make sure you run the installer as Administrator; right click the installer and choose Run As Administrator.

I'm having the same problem and have installed it as an adminstrative program. It then asks for a registration code, which I don't have, or you can click on the trial version. I click on that and the Configure PostgreSQL pops up. That says I need a password too which I don't have.

What do I need to do?

If you ran the PT3 with postgres installer, the default password is 'dbpass'.
If it's asking you to configure the password as part of the install, the password needs to contain at least one of each of: an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter, a number, a symbol. Make sure you keep a note of what the password is.

Did the installation complete OK?
If you go to Task Manager -> Processes, do you see any postgres processes? (there should be several)

If postgres is running, but the password won't work, you can remove the need for postgres passwords:

I just upgraded my PT2 to PT3 and after the installation was completed the Configure PostgreSQL Server window popped up with the password blank, i tried dbpass and passwords with the requirements you mentioned above but it keeps saying "Unable to connect to this database. Please check configuration".
Thing is, i dont see any postgres processes in the task manager AND i dont have the postgres application under programs either. I have never used postgres before or been in contact with it in any way, with pt2. What to do?

If you download and install PokerTracker 3 Beta 23 with PostgreSQL from our download page it will install and configure PostgreSQL for you properly.
