Have to reformat help plz

I have to reformat my laptop and dont want to lose my database .I have an external hard drive can anyone guide me in right direction as to how to backup my database an reinstall it after i have reformated an restored all necessary components .Im am currently running PT3 beta23 with postgreSQL8.3. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Ty

1. purge all hands and import them after u reinstalled
2. backup database using PGAdmin III
3. backing up a postgres database from the command line

If u keep the structur of your harddisks u could maybe just copy the whole database to a different harddisk, reinstall everything and replace the postgres-folder with the one u copied earlier - but no promise - try one of the above options - its safer
