2 different operation sistems with one database of Postgress

Postby whisky » Tue Apr 21, 2009 1:27 pm

Hy. I have 2 operation sistems. 1st is XP and the second is Vista. Can i use the same postgres data with bouth of them?
- XP is instaled on disc C,
- Vista instaled on D.
- And all data from postgres is on disc E.

I thought that i can install the same version Postgres SQL to Vista and during the instalation show the directory with Data of postgress. So can i do that?

I just went through this with for using two installations of WinXP on same computer, different drives.

I went through the installation process on the 2nd copy of WinXP, chose the same directory as 1st installation. I chose to not initialize the DB cluster so that my data would not be lost. The installation proccess seemed to figure out that very little work actually needed to be done, so finished very quickly.

You will need to make sure that both installations have access to the files in the postgresql installation directories.
I had to turn off 'simple file sharing', then adjust the access for all users to allow all access to files. There are other posts detailing how to do this.

I didn't make notes on all the stuff I had to do, but this should get you started.
G'luck all,
