PostgreSQL service won't start

Postby nb123 » Wed May 06, 2009 9:26 am

Hi,

I'm having an issue I see all over the forum, but can't seem to find a solution to it. I installed another piece of software today on my computer (AirDefense) which may be interfering with the postgreSQL, as it was working fine till today. I kept getting the usual PT3 error sayings: -

"Unable to begin feeder import process. Reason: Unable to login to database (April 2009 Holdem). Reason: could not connect to server: Connection refused (0x0000274D/10061) Is the server running on host "localhost" and accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5432?"

I've done all of the following: --

1. Uninstalled AirDefense
2. Uninstalled Postgres (including net user postgres /delete and deleting the entire data folder)
3. Uninstalled Pokertracker
4. Reinstalled both programs
5. Checked to see if I could manually start the service, but was unsuccessful as the service wouldn't start

What else should I try? Thanks!

I've also tried looking at my Windows XP event viewer (Control Panel --> Admin Tools --> Event Viewer), and the application log shows an error log for PostgreSQL:

"could not create inherited socket: error code 10022"

Also, the system log showed:

"The pgsql-8.3 service was unable to log on as .\postgres with the currently configured password due to the following error:
Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. "

So I changed the password then the system log said:

"The PostgreSQL Server 8.3 service was successfully sent a start control."

So it seems like it connected but couldn't start...

What should I do now?

Still trying as many things as I can find - I tried to find the postmaster.pid file, but couldn't find it.

I read that maybe my antivirus has something to do with it? I'm using Trend Micro, disabled the firewall, quit the antivirus, still same issue (windows firewall off too).

Also, I can ping my localhost at 127.0.0.1.

I don't think it should be a problem with the firewall, cos it was working fine till yesterday, then today I installed Air Defense and it caused problems, I feel it's more likely to be something wrong with the localhost? But I don't know what to do?

Please attach the last few files in C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.3\data\pg_log (they're dated so just pick the recent ones), right-click and choose 'Send To Compressed/zipped Folder', then attach the zip file to a ticket on the Support system, and link to this thread in the reference field of the ticket so that we can investigate.
Kraada knows more about postgres than I do, but he's off today - if we can't see the problem from your logs I'm sure kraada will be able to help you tomorrow.
