in task manager you should see 5 or so postgres.exe processes. if you do, then the service is running afaik. no need to start the service again.

you can verify that its started by going to 'control panel -> administrative tools -> services' and finding PostgreSQL and seeing if it says Started.

try this:

start -> programs -> postgre -> pgAdminIII

double click your database server on the left pane, enter your db password. does this work? if it does, then your db is working properly, and its likely that PT3 is configured incorrectly, with wrong connection info or user/pass info. then you resolve that in PT3s Database Management window

In task manager I do see the postgres.exe processes and I also see that they are started when I go to 'control panel -> administrative tools -> services' -

But when I try this, "start -> programs -> postgre -> pgAdminIII double click your database server on the left pane, enter your db password. does this work?" It does not work and I get this error message: An error has occurred: Error connecting to the server: server closed the connection unexpectedly. This probably means the server terminated abnormally before or while processing the request.

Should I reinstall PT3? If that's a sure fix then I'll do it, I don't care. I'm just worried that there's some update that happened with my firewall and I have no way of knowing what I have to do in order to change what needs to be changed.

Internet Explorer 8 installed today caused this

"PokerTracker was unable to connect to any PostgreSQL databases" then "Please make you have PostgreSQL running"

I hope the programmer can provide an easy fix.

GOT FIX!

In Task Manager > Show All Processes > End Process for each (6?) PostgreSQL (may all delete with first) > close

start pokertracker3 (pass error wth OK) > database (top line) > database management > set active > close

re-start pokertracker3

ALL DONE!
(but good luck)

PS - please post note if this works for you

Try what mossback1 suggests - or you ought to be able to get the same effect by stopping the postgres service with Start > Programs > Postgres > Stop Service. (do the postgres processes disappear if you do that?)

If you can't connect with PGAdmin either, then the problem is nothing to do with PT3.
Something is preventing applications connecting to the postgres service.
Did you have UAC disabled when you installed postgres?
Try disabling your firewall temporarily before you start PT3 too.

Wow! So far so good. I can't believe that was all it took. Thanks mossback1!

WhiteRider, no I didn't have UAC disabled when I reinstalled postgre but isn't that only for Vista users?

One last question (hopefully).. I deleted my postgre folder on initial uninstall so that I would be starting over with a new database. At the time I was unable to delete the actual database in "Database Management" because I couldn't create a new one.. so I just "Removed" It. But by doing so it says, "Removing a database does not delete it. It only removes it from PokerTrackers settings. How do I go about deleting it now that I have a new database created?

Thanks again all!

Well, I spoke to soon. Upon restarting my computer I come to the same problem. I am however able to "stop service" which fixes the problem, and then "start service". But I will continue to have this problem every time I start my computer.. ughhh This has to be something to do with an update with my computer huh?

Click Start -> Run type in "services.msc" and hit enter (no quotes). Find the PostgreSQL service and change it to manual. Then when you restart your computer PostgreSQL won't be started automatically you'll need to start it yourself - and PT3 should attempt to start it properly, so you should be good to go thereafter.
