I just encountered the same problem with the same error message. (Also on a mac running Mountain Lion)
Two things may have caused it. one, I I accidentally deleted the PostgreSQL user, and another thing that might have caused it was I had to reset my spotlight index (having problems with Time Machine)
I re-downloaded PostgreSQL, and installed it (now the PostgreSQL user is present at the login screen when I restart) but I still get the same error message. When I try to create a new one i get
Unable to create PostgreSQL database: PT3_2013_10_22_002537
Reason: Unable to login to database (template1). Reason: could not connect to server: No such file or directory Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432"?
When I try to browse I get
Unable to login to database (template1) Reason: could not connect to server: No such file or directory Is the server running locally and excepting connections on UNIX domain socket "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432"?
any ideas?
thanks in advance.
