I just tried installing this, however right at the end of the installation it just says "Denied. Can't create username JOHN"

I see that you got the issue resolved by disabling User Account Control (UAC). Good deal

user postgres couldn't be created access denied.

That message keeps coming up and quitting the installation

Can u tell me step by step what information to enter?

i must be doing something wrong

Tom,

Are you running Vista? If so, try disabling 'User Account Control' (UAC) then reinstalling...

yeah i've done that already.

I am running on vista using VMware fusion on intel iMac.

Dunno if that makes a difference

Grrr. thought that turning AUC off would be the end, but I got another error.

I guess because I have attempted to install it before, after I turned off AUC right at the end of the installation it says "username JOHN could not be created because it already exists" then it rolls back the whole installation.

You should not use a user account that is identical to your Windows username. I suggest keeping the username as 'postgres'.

I have disabled AUC and tried installing postgre 8.3, but I'm still unsuccessful. I get this error during installation.

Invalid Username specified: Logon Failure: unknown username or bad password.

I left the username as postgre.

Go Start->Programs->PostgreSQL->Configuration Files->Edit pg_hba.conf

At the bottom of the file there are two lines that end in 'md5'. Change the 'md5' to 'trust'. File->Save

Then go Start->Programs->PostgreSQL->Reload Configurations

Now, you are not required to enter a password and you should no longer receive the "Invalid Username specified: Logon Failure: unknown username or bad password." error.

I haven't been able to install 8.2 either, get the same error. I do not have a postgreSQL folder where i can change the configurations.
