Ramjet,

Click Start --> Control Panel --> User Accounts and create a new user called "postgres" and make sure it is set to be a limited account.

Then attempt to reinstall normally and use the postgres account (use whatever password you specify in the installer as well) and it should work properly.

If you ever decide to uninstall PostgreSQL you will need to remove that account manually at that time, but it should work this way.

Thanks for the tip.

My installation of PostgreSQL 8.2 now stops at "Setting Filesystem Permissions" and I get an error message saying: "Failed to set permissions on the installed files. Please see the logfile in .....\tmp\pgperm.log "

any idea how to solve this?

Looks like I will have to try out HM, because this PostgreSQL crap just won't work by me. Any last suggestions of what I could do?

As I understand it, HM uses postgres too.

It seems like postgres 8.3.3 works on Vista - see this thread for how to do a full reinstall: Total uninstall/reinstall of pt3

(I assume that you tried the "pt3 with postgres" install originally?)

Are you running PT3 as Administrator?
Are you entering your username (postgres) and password correctly?
You could try removing the need for postgres passwords: How To: Remove PostgreSQL Password
