I did as Dave told me to and was successful in running the command "net user postgres /delete" However, when I downloaded PT3(the version w/o postgresql) and tried to install it, still the same "configure postgreSQL server" window pops up instead of helping me install postgresql afresh.

Josh, we have two people here, one on vista on on XP (I guess from the screenshots).

skoldpadda is the one contemplating giving up, and I believe is on XP

You need the version *with* postgreSQL now :)

You downloaded the version without PostgreSQL. You need the version with it or it can't install it for you.

_dave_, thanks for bringing that to my attention. Sometimes I don't think to even look at who is posting. How can we test if he is running under an administrative account under XP?

Got it. I d/l the PT3 with postgresql and started the installation. It is taking unusually long time to install the postgresql(what are all these files with different country names and different time zone? It seems like every single country is listed) but everything seems to be fine. Thank you guys for your help.

I get that far and my error messages come up later during the install.

Ehh, I do not know :( I do know anything other than an adminitrator is pretty useless / broken in XP, so it is unlikely to be a restriced account. After a little reading, I'm guessing "Owner" must be a member of at least "power users" if not "Administrators".

Maybe a good option would be to remove all traces of postgres, then try the installation in "Safe Mode with Networking" - here you will certainly be able to log in as the ultimate "Administrator" - and if it installs OK, everything should be fine thereafter.

[quoteq3x]
This is frustrating... I'm about to give up.

Would I have the same problem with the final product?
[/quoteq3x]

These problems will not appear in the final version - but the feedback / help from beta testers who encounter the problems is very helpful to their solving - so please don't give up :)

EDIT: Another idea - could you try installing postgres alone, see if you get the same errors?

I'd be happy to try that and I won't give up before you guys do!

Problems now though trying to uninstall PT3

from the link I posted on the last page:

[quoter7n]
3.1) PostgreSQL and/or the installer crashes at startup, fails to start or hangs on start

By far most common reasons for this are antivirus and firewalls. If you have any firewall software installed on your machine, try either disabling it or uninstalling it. If you have any antivirus software installed, you must disable it for the directories that are to be used by PostgreSQL. If that still does not help, it may be required to completely uninstall the software from the machine.

Specific issues have been reported with the nod32 antivirus product. If you are using this product, add "postmaster.exe" to the list of excluded processes (available under advanced options). This has been reported to fix the problem.

Specific issues have also been reported with McAfee and Panda anti-virus software and NetLimiter network monitoring software. While some people do have PostgreSQL working with these software packages, there is no specific or even recommend solutions that have not worked in some cases, so the issues would appear to be installation specific, sometimes even requiring uninstallation.
[/quoter7n]

Are you running any of these?

heh, I'm unlikely to give up - Josh / AP10 even less likely :)

FWIW, although this may seem like a pin in the ass now - you are doing great service to PT3 if you can help figure out what is causing the trouble, so thank you :)

EDIT: If I had a computer behaving like this (not letting me install / uninstall things cleanly) - and I didn't know why - I'd format / reinstall XP. Not recommended unless you are familiar with the process - and I guess if you were, you'd have considered it already :)

skoldpadda, it looks like you tried to uninstall PT3 with it still running. Make sure you close it prior to uninstalling.

So at this point, the PostgreSQL installation starts, but gives you that "initdb" error, correct? I've gotten this error too, and it was caused because the PostgreSQL directory previously existed and it couldn't overwrite the information. What you need to do is to delete the "C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL" directory from your harddrive, then try installing PostgreSQL. I really recommend using PT3 to install PostgreSQL, as it's a lot less overwhelming that way (and less error prone too).

Can you tell me what happens when that directory is deleted and PT3 tries to install PostgreSQL again?
