Help. Today when I turned on computer PostgreSQL database wouldn't connect. I get this error message.
"Unable to log on th database. Reason could not connect to server. Connection refused 0x0000274D/10061 Is the server running on host "localhost" and accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5432? What do I do. I don't care about the database. I have all my HHs and can import from scratch. I didn't do anything and it worked fine when I shut it down last night.

First thing is just to try restarting postgres: Start -> Programs -> PostgreSQL -> Start Service.
If that or a reboot doesn't work, then have a look through the
Database / Postgres FAQ for the postmaster.pid part.

I located postmaster.pid ,deleted it and started postgreSQL service. It didn't work. I noticed that when I look at the postgreSQL service there is no stop option all are greyed out except start and when you hit that it says POSTgreSQl 8.0 service stated then stopped.

What antivirus/firewall are you running?
Try turning the A/V off temporarily and starting the service.

I have a 4 port router. I connected internet directly to computer. Still can't access DB. I didn't think this was the problem since it's been working for over a year but you never know

I read a similar post concerning a PT2 user in this forum. It seems I'm having the same problem as he did and it looks like it never got resolved. Is it feasable to uninstall postgreSQL and reinstall? I have all my HHs because I anticipate things like this. Is this a possible solution?

I seem to remember kASPERSKY being mentioned before in cases like this, but I'm not sure..
Yes, re-installing is definitely a possible solution - it would allow you to upgrade to a newer version of postgres too, which might give you better performance into the bargain.
See this post:
Total uninstall/reinstall of pt3Note: you shouldn't need to uninstall PT3 to do this..

Ok I uninstalled and reinstalled postgreSQL. How do I purge my old DBs fromPT3? It keeps saying password not supplied.

It looks ok now. I just hit remove to delete the other databases. The new database after I installed postgreSQL again works. I turned off Kaspersky during install and I exempted the postgreSQL folded fron antivirus protection. Hopefully no more problems. thx for help whale
