I have now tried to install 3 or 4 versions of Postgres(8.2.7, 8.3, 8.3.1) but everytime the installation stops here:

The log tells me that d:\mplay.com gjenkjennes ikke som en intern eller ekstern kommando,
kj›rbart program eller satsvis fil. (d:mplay.com cant be recognized as internal or external command, program or file.)

Have completely uninstalled it about 20 times but i still get the error message. Did the /cmd /net user /delete thing.

I have XP.

Are you installing a non-English version of postgres?
Have you tried the PT3 with postgres download?

I installed the english version and i have tried the PT3 dowload too.

I'm not a postgres expert, but when we've had that problem before it has been on Vista.

I notice you're running Windows XP, so you should be installing PostgreSQL 8.3, but let's start clean:

First, I want to double check that there's no remnant of PostgreSQL; so run the net user postgres /delete one more time and completely delete the C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL directory.

Then download and begin the installation of PostgreSQL 8.3.3. In the setup when you get to the option to initialize the database cluster, uncheck that option. We are going to initialize the database cluster manually.

Once the installation has finished, you need to click Start --> Programs --> PostgreSQL --> Command Prompt.

At the command prompt type:

initdb -D <Some Directory>

where <Some Directory> is the directory you want the database to be stored. If you want it in D:\PT3Data\ create a blank folder called PT3Data on the D: drive and substitute D:\PT3Data\ for <Some Directory> above. You can put it wherever you want, but you'll probably want to remember where that is, as that is the directory that is going to get large when you've imported enough hands and that's the one where all of your data resides.

If you get an error running initdb into a new blank directory, please paste the new error message here in the original language as well as with the best translation you can muster and we'll go from there. But we will get this installed for you, don't worry

I tried the command prompt thing and i got a similar message as i did when i tried to install it in the first place:

The files belonging to this database system will be owned by user "MY NAME".
This user must also own the server process.

The database cluster will be initialized with locale Norwegian <Bokmål>_Norway.1252

The Norwegian text says: "d:\mplay.com cant be recognized as internal or external command, program or file."

What is the exact command you executed at the command prompt? I am unsure what 'mplay.com' is unless if that is part of the data directory you tried to configure?

I used this command: initdb -D C:\TP3data\

I have made a folder called TP3data on my C drive before i executed the command.
I have no idea what the mplay thing is

Run this command:

initdb -D "C:/Program Files/PostgreSQL/8.3/data" -U postgres -W

It should then prompt for your password which is dbpass if you do not know it.

Problem you experienced is probably due to trying to initialize the data to a non standard PostgreSQL data directory.

i did try this command: initdb -D "C:/Program Files/PostgreSQL/8.3/data" -U postgres -W

Im getting the same error messages. Any more ideas?
