Run PT3 and PostgreSQL from a portable drive?

Postby NWNewell » Wed Jan 07, 2009 1:02 am

Can I run PT3 (program and exe files) and the PostgreSQL database from a portable hard drive (i.e. 8GB stick, WD Passport, etc)??

I travel and play from multiple different computers and would like to be able to simply plug in a portable drive and fire up PT3 from it always be able to have my database with me. But I'm not sure if this is possible.

1. Can I run PT3 from the portable hard drive or does it require system files to be installed on my C-drive?

2. Can I run PT3's databases from a portable drive or will it experience complications syncing with a portable drive?

Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure if this is possible; I know you can put the database on a hotswap drive (See this tutorial) but I'm not sure if the PT3 system will move so gracefully. And with the above setup I believe you still need to install PostgreSQL manually on each computer.

However, you're welcome to give it a try and see how it works out.

One note: the PT3 PostgreSQL databases get large; expect 1G of database size for every 100k hands you import, and you need 2-3x the amount of space used for the drive free in order to cluster properly, so plan your external hard drive size accordingly.

I don't think it's possible to install the application itself on a drive like this - it needs to be installed on each machine.

Hi,

I'm just about to get a new laptop so will need to move PT3 onto this. Once I've done this I'm then looking to get an external hard drive and run pt3 from this. Is this possible?

I will always be using the laptop for poker so PostgreSQL will to be installed on the laptop - but can PT3 run from the external hard drive? Or is PT3 installed on the laptop and then it reads the information from the external harddrive. Apologies if this is rather muddled!

Would be grateful if if somone could advise. Basically what Im looking to achieve is to have my pokertracker3 databases on the external hard drive which will then be connected to the laptop

Many thanks

Yes, that should work fine, just install PostgreSQL to the external drive and you should realize you will need to always have the external drive with you to have your PT3 data.
