New computer for PT3/PostgreSQL

Hi

I'm unsure in which forum to post this but I think this is where I can find the knowledge that I seek.

At the moment I'm running PT 2 from my desktop computer. It's a Core 2 Duo E6600@2.40GHz with 2 gigs of ram. Win XP Pro plus most software are running from my C-drive, a 36gb Raptor disk. Pokertracker and PostgreSQL are running from my G-drive, two WD 250 gb disks in RAID 1 mirror.

It seems my computer sometimes strugle a bit when 5-tabling on different sites with PT and PAHud running, a couple of tabs open in IE, MSN Messenger and perhaps a DivX or H.262 video playing, especially if I load up Utorrent.

Therefore I'm considering buying a new computer for Poker/PT/postgre purposes but which will give me the best results in terms of performance?

1: Buying a new Core 2 Quad Q6600 with a Raptor disk for OS and some other disks in RAID (perhaps even RAID 1+0) for PT and PostgreSQL, while at the same time also using this computer for everything else including iTunes, video and Utorrent.

2: Buying the above computer while using my "old" Core 2 Duo as a server running PostgreSQL with a new clean install of Windows and PostgreSQL running on different disks in RAID.

3: Keeping my "old" computer but buying a dedicated server for PostgreSQL.

Also would I benefit from buying a quadcore Xeon, either as my desktop computer or a dedicated server?

I think #2 is your best option although I would not run Windows and PostgreSQL on different disks but rather run them together but put the PostgreSQL database on a separate hard drive. I suggest reading Dave's excellent post/tutorial, [url=http://www.pokertracker3.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=526&start=04ov]Create new db in a different drive[/url4ov] which seems to really benefit PostgreSQL performance.

In the end, you would effectively, have your Quad core as your main computer that you play on and run PokerTracker 3, a separate computer to run PostgreSQL and a separate hard-drive for the PostgreSQL database. This would be really cool and very fast.

Best regards,

Derek

Thanks!

So should I install PT3 without PostgreSQL on the main computer and only install postgreSQL on the server?

Added to this, if you haven't already - make sure uTorrent is throttled to not saturate your connection's upload bandwidth - at most have it set to imit to 1/2 capacity, unless you have a sick fast internet connection.

A saturated uplink will cause serious issues for almost all poker clients, and torrent is a very easy method to saturate an uplink :)
