Pt3/PT2 both running same pc, but different sql versions?

Postby zubs1aa » Tue May 26, 2009 8:29 am

Hi-

I'm fed up with PT2 and want to demo PT3, but without discarding PT2 until I decide I am happy with PT3 etc.

So I downloaded the demo and ran into a problem.

I've got postgre 8.2.x and PT2 on my c: drive.

I know that I want to put PT3 and postgre 8.3 on a different physical drive for performance reasons. So, I downloaded 8.3 and tried to install it to my d: drive. However, i got an error when on the install screen where it first asked for a password to be entered to create an account - bad password or username i think was the error.

Am I having the problem because I cannot have 8.2 on drive C and 8.3 on drive d: concurrently as I'd like? Or did I likely make some other sort of error.

Oh. P.s. running XP Home, with admin rights on my account.

My plan was to get the latest 8.3.x release installed and then install PT3 - so I didn't have to worry about patching upwards the sql after the fact.

Thanks....definitely want to try this and get my butt off of crappy old PT2!

You want to use the postgres user for the database in the PostgreSQL installer; the default password for that user is "dbpass" or "svcpass".

Umm i think you aren't being specific enough since this doesn't work.

1) remember I already have 8.2 installed on my C: drive- I don't want to remove it (in case this is part of the problem)

2) I designated the location directory on the d: drive

3) Then on the next screen, I tried both of the passwords you mentioned but got the same error both times:

so....what am i doing wrong?

also: on my 8.2.x install, i've changed the password to one I wouldn't forget. I tried using that as well and got the same errors.

I also tried stopping the service for 8.2 before installing the 8.3- and that didn't work

Start --> Run --> type cmd and hit enter. At the prompt type: "net user postgres /delete" (without the quotes) and hit enter. Then you should be able to get past the error you are seeing.

When you reinstall PostgreSQL it will recreate that user.

You may want to just disable password authentication locally once the user has been recreated for simplicity's sake, though. Follow this tutorial and PT2 shouldn't have any trouble using that username after the user has been recreated.

OK I'm tearing my hair out again.

I followed your instructions.

Now, I can't run PT2 as it cant connect to SQL (and I cant seem to start the 8.2 service either)

Also, PT3 can't find a PT2 database to convert!

SO NOTHING WORKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

8.2 is installed on my c: drive
8.3 installed on my G drive

PT2 and PT3 are installed on my C: drive
I deleted the password per your instructions.

And now I am Bleeped with no functionality. AAAAAAAAAAAAARFFFFFFF!

PLz help! (I read the tutorials and none of them say how to hook/direct PT3 to find the PT2 db!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Crappy way to end a crappy night on the tables with PT now completely crushed.

OK 1 further update.

I imported about 15,000 hands on a manual import from my processed PT2 hands just to see if PT 3 would run. It does, so I'm not dead in the water entirely here.

Unfortunately I still can;'t get to my PT2 files to convert and I cant run pt2 either.

When I first setup OT3 was I supposed to check-off that it was not a new db but rather an old one and then point to the original PT2 one somehow? I'm pretty techie I like to think but obviously even I can't follow the instructions that well/they need to be improved :)
