Deinstall PostgreSQL?!

Postby kratistos » Tue Mar 25, 2008 8:00 pm

hi all!

i purchased pt today and wanted to take postgresql as my database, but there was the problem. i had a database before on postgresql for pokeroffice, but i don't remember the username nor the password. i tried to uninstall the postgresql version on my computer to start with a new download of it, but i can't find a way to uninstall it. there from where i usually uninstall programs from my computer ( don't know how it is called in english) is no button to uninstall it.
pardon my english, but i'm german.

regards emanuel

I thought PokerOffice used MySQL... are you sure?

If it is a recent version, I wouldn't bother removing it - just set the authentication mode to "trust" and you won't need to remember your password - and there is a very high chance the superuser name is "postgres".

EDIT: AP10 explains how in this post: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=1924

AFAIK, you remeove it as normal via Control Panel -> Add / Remove (or whatever Vista calls it).

Then you delete the remaining folder from Program files manually.

Then you issue the command "net user postgres /delete" as administrator to remove the postgres user, which allows the new version to install correctly.

It would be worth reading the sticky in this forum (about Vista + Postgres 8.3) - there is probably some useful info in there about common troubles for your situation.

Has anyone done this successfully?
My c: drive is getting a little low on space and I have a bigger faster 2nd drive I'd like to use. Rather than using the method _dave_ detailed to make a TABLESPACE for each new DB it would seem easiest to uninstall postgres and re-install on my new drive, yes?
I don't use postgres for anything other than PT3, so I don't need to keep anything from the currently installed version.

They are the correct instructions...

OK, I eventually got round to trying this this morning.

Firstly, the above uninstall method works fine, though I think you need a reboot after this to finalise the changes (or maybe just to stop something running - maybe there's something else we need to stop?).

Firstly I tried installing the latest PT3 with postgres version, expecting to be asked where to install postgres, but there doesn't seem to be an option..
So then I tried reinstalling PT3 to my other drive thinking maybe it would install postgres to the same drive, but again it just does the default c: installation.

So I had to resort to downloading and installing from the postgres website.
I got this working, though it's not especially straightforward - there are lots of "you must read this" and "be careful about that" messages, but actually it all worked fine just accepting defaults (apart from the installation path). I'm on XP Home, so can't comment on Vista installation..
