That error implies your PostgreSQL server isn't running. Click Start --> Programs --> PostgreSQL --> Start Services, then try again (PT3 automatically starts the server, which is why you don't have to do this normally).

Thank kraada for the prompt reply.

Before i try it, can you advise roughly how much memory do i need for about 800k hands?
Was gonna try backing up with DVD.

Thanks.

I'm not sure how big the backup file will be for that but I'm pretty sure it will fit on a DVD.

The most likely cause then is that some firewall or anti-virus program is keeping PostgreSQL from starting. Can you try looking around to see what potential ones there are? The ones that give PostgreSQL the most trouble are Norton 360 and F-Secure (which can go under Charter Security Suite and a firewall program that comes with an ISP called Orange).

Norton 360 should offer a free upgrade to version 3.0. Take the upgrade; 3.0 does not have nearly as many problems, but version 2.0 does not let PostgreSQL start regularly no matter what you try, and trust me, I've tried.
