Postby pr1mo » Sat Sep 05, 2009 2:17 pm

when i restart my computer sometimes windows asks to run the chk dsk utility where it scans thru my computer and also my postgres db's. is there a possibility this will do any damage to a db? is it better to skip or is it ok to run?

CHKDSK shouldn't do anything to your databases. It is just checking the integrity of your disk - it shouldn't actually DO anything unless there is a problem with your disk, in which case if the error is in part of your disk which holds your database then you'll likely have a bit of a problem anyway.

Also note that if windows is asking for a chkdsk run frequently your HD has issues - perhaps severe problems and impending doom.

onthehustle is absolutely correct. I would strongly recommend if nothing else, back up all of your important data onto a DVD or flash drive so that if your hard drive goes completely dead you don't lose all of your data. (And if it doesn't go dead, having a backup isn't a bad thing either!)
