Postgres and PT

I have a mac snow leapard OS. I have downloaded PT trial and Postgres 8.4. When I run PT, I get to the config postgres server window, click connect and get unable to connect to this database. Please check configuration

When I run Postgres manually and try to connect to server I get. An error has occurred. Error connecting to the server :FATAL: password authentication failed for user "postgres"

Where do I go from here?

I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling, restarting all several times. End up at the same spot.
