I messed this up postgreSQL won't start

Upgraded to 8.4 everything running fine but then on windows startup I was having to choose between postgres and my username when I logged in which was annoying as I like it to just run automatically to the desktop.
So I went in user accounts and deleted the windows user postgres. Tried to run pt and it now it will not load the database file go into windows services postgresql-8.4 tries to run says starting for a couple minutes then stopped.
Uninstalled the programme in control panel to reinstall but it didn't do it cleanly. In services the postgresql-8.4 was still listed after the uninstallation. Therefore it wouldn't let me reinstall saying file already there.
I ran cmd and put in sc delete postgresql8.4. Which then allowed me to reinstall which worked okay except postgresql-8.4 will not run even when I try to manually go start server.
PLEASE HELP!!
