The one-click installer is the only option for PostgreSQL 9, so that is fine. Having another version on your computer is fine too, although if you want to run both at the same time you'll need to configure 9 to use a different port (e.g. 5433 instead of 5432), but if you stop (or do not start) 8.2 that shouldn't be an issue. Either way it shouldn't affect the postgresql.conf file as that is in the 9.0 subfolder, which is completely separate from 8.2.

It sounds like that file wasn't written during the install. Are you an administrator on this computer?

Ah, I notice you're in a workgroup - I don't remember for sure but I think there may be something you need to do when you're in a workgroup. I'll see if I can find out from one of our PostgreSQL experts.

Apologies - I misremembered. That won't cause any problems.
Try following the unisntall/reinstall guide in the Documentation (the guides are for earlier versions but the process should be the same) and if that doesn't help create a Support ticket and someone will help you get things working.

ok i noticed that after the attempt to install postgres 9.0 it creqated a new user account called postgres, yesterday everything was working fine, i did my housekeeping after using my computer all day (thing took forever like 6hrs!) i deleted the new user account (since postgres 9.0 had an install problem) and then i shut it down in the evening. Today i cant accessa anything using PT3 or HEM, its just says : unable to connect to database. When i open PG admin assistant i cant acces my databases either, i have got a ticket in the help link you gave me, but i need this fixing today its costing me $ by the minute

The postgres user account is required in order for PostgreSQL to function properly. The easiest way to get the account recreated properly is going to be to uninstall and reinstall PostgreSQL. This will not damage or affect your data, and so should be fairly painless.

As I said, this will not damage your data. However, PostgreSQL 8.2 databases will not load properly in 9.0 - if your data was already there, then just reinstalling 9.0 will work fine. Otherwise you may need to backup your 8.2 databases and restore them in 9.0 which may involve reinstalling 8.2.
