I am trying to install the PT trial on a Snow Leopard machine but it doesn't connect. It doesn't seem to start automatically. I can see /Library/PostgreSQL/8.4 but I don't see Postgres in the Applications folder. I don't know what to do next.

That sounds like you somehow have a partial PostgreSQL install. Please follow these directions to uninstall PostgreSQL and set things up for PT3 to install it again. (If you don't have the uninstaller just skip that step.)
