Error connecting to default database

Hi

I read all the similar-looking topics I could find here but none of them seemed to have quite the same issue.

I have had PT3 for several years on a computer with no problems, until this week when I tried to run it for the first time in a couple of weeks (it is not my primary computer).

I get a dialog box with caption "Select default database" and text

"
Error connecting to default database.

Please select one of the valid databases below or create a new one.
Note: It may take time for the Database List to fully populate.
"

All my databases are listed but not selectable. An attempt to create a new database either crashes the process or gives another message of being unable to login to the database (template1).

My task manager shows several postgresql.exe processes (one of them comsumes ~40% of CPU time, is it normal). pg_ctl.exe appears for a while after startup. I have updated my PT3 from 3.10 to 3.11.7 BETA, and uninstalled my postgreSQL 8.3.x and reinstalled 8.3.17. Neither seemed to have any effect, do you have any suggestion what I could still try? I am not into uninstall/reinstall the whole thing (https://www.pokertracker.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=8047).

It may well be unimportant, but I had a system scan with AVG for the first (and last?) time one day before PT3 stopped working. However, it was several weeks before this scan that I had PT3 running for the last time.

It sounds like PT3 cannot connect to PostgreSQL - either because the service has been stopped or because something is preventing it connecting. Please check out our Firewall Guide as that is the most likely cause.

If that doesn't help please Click Start, type services and click on it when it appears. Locate PostgreSQL in the list - is the service running? If not, can you start it?
