I have holdemmanager on my laptop and thus have postgresql installed already. I've installed the pt3 and wanted to use the trial to see if i wanted to purchase it since holdemmanager doesnt' support some sites i play on. when i try to open up pt3, it says i have no database and closes. i currently have postgresql 8.4. i don't know how to move forward. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try using the password 'postgrespass' to connect to PostgreSQL.

You will not be able to use your HM database directly - once you are connected to PostgreSQL PT3 will make a new database for you and you will be able to import your hand history files from the HM Archive folder using Manual Import.
