Tried to tune PostgreSQL now can't start PT3

Postby fadrus » Sun Aug 26, 2012 11:55 am

I have had a slowdown problem when using PT3. I use a netbook with 2GB of RAM. Without PT3 running I can have up to 7 tables running whilst watching YouTube videos or BBC iplayer which I like to have on in the background. CPU usage is at about 75-80%. With PT3 Hud running even two tables increases CPU usage to 95-100% and makes streaming video jumpy and the sound crackly.

I have defragged the hard disk, disabled last access time support and disabled legacy filename support. None of this did any good. The last thing I have tried is the process under Performance Tuning PostgreSQL. I upgraded from 8.3.19 to 8.3.20 and downloaded the Enterprise Tuning Wizard. This didn't quite work as described in the tutorial since everything just happened automatically and there were no manually selectable options to select server utilisation so I don't know if that really worked.

On restarting PT3 I get a popup to Configure PostgreSQL Database. If I click 'Create' I get 'Unable to log in to database (template 1) could not connect to server'. If I tick 'database already exists' and browse I get a similar message. Therefore I can no longer run Poker Tracker at all.

I have turned the computer off and on and I have disabled windows firewall and Avast anti-virus with no success. I have also clicked on the 'start database' option. I assume that the database then starts but don't really know how to tell.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Click Start and type 'services.msc' to see the Services window.
Do you see PostgreSQL in the list?
Is it started? Can you start it?

Hello WhiteRider. Thanks for the reply.

No, I can't see it in the Services list.

I can go to PostgreSQL from All Programs in the start menu and select start database from there. When I do that I get a Dos popup saying 'Server starting' but it's very brief and still nothing appears in the Services list.

I'm trying to think of the download process and I vaguely remember something asking if I wanted to download the database as a service and if I did I'd need a username and password. I said no and skipped that step. Of course, since I don't really know what I'm doing I may be misremembering the option and it had nothing to do with a service.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling PostgreSQL as described in the documentation. You can keep your existing databases as long as you reinstall the same major version and this should get things working again for you.

Thanks WhiteRider, that worked.

The link you provided was a more step by step method than the one I looked at originally and it turned out I had failed to complete the Service page properly.

Unfortunately even running the tuning wizard hasn't helped that much with the slow down issue but at least I have the software working again.
