Problem Installing 8.3

I first had this problem when starting up my PT3 (which I haven't used in probably a year or so):

Error connecting to default database.
Please select one of the valid databases below or create a new one.
Note: It may take time for the Database List to fully populate.

After a quick bit of browsing on the internet I saw it was recommended to install the latest version of PT3 which I have done and then to uninstall and reinstall postgreSQL 8.3 (the one I had).

So I uninstalled and reinstalled version 8.3.20 as it was the latest version with the win32 file (one of the steps from PT instructions), following the online instructions from this website which was fine until I got to Service Configuration. The instructions say to create a password (SQL says create a password or leave it blank, I've tried both) which I have done but its not letting me past this stage and flagging up a message saying invalid username and/or password etc...

Help please?

PS I'm using Windows Vista (have followed all the appropriate steps for Vista) if this is of relevance.

Thanks in advance!

Try the following passwords:

svcPASS83
dbpass
and
postgrespass

Those are the three most common defaults used for poker software.

Hi Kraada thanks for the reply however just tried all of those passwords and none of them worked...

This is annoying! Any other suggestions?

Follow the steps here and it will remove the user so you can put in whatever password you'd prefer - the account will be recreated when you reinstall.

Thanks for that Kraada I've followed those steps and managed to install postgresql 8.3 now and checked it was running which it was. However just started up PT3 and I'm still getting the same fault. All databases grey'ed out, won't let me open a new database and the following message still:

Error connecting to default database.

Please select one of the valid databases below or create a new one.
Note: It may take time for the Database List to fully populate.

Click the New button and attempt to create a new database - does that complete?

Nope it does not - get the following message when trying to create new:

Unable to create PostgreSQL database: PT3_2012_11_19_212257
Reason: Unable to login to database (template1). Reason: server closed the connection unexpectedly This probably means the server terminated abnormally before or while processing the request.

Click Start type services.msc and click on it when it appears. Is PostgreSQL in the list? Can you get it to start?

Its not on the list no. But it installed and it was running when I did the ctr+alt+del processes check initially.

That's very strange.

Please create a support ticket and attach the last 3 or 4 files in the C:\Program Files (x86)\PostgreSQL\8.3\data\pg_log\ folder to your ticket and we'll investigate further for you.
