Postgre service wont start

Postby jdizm327 » Wed Nov 21, 2012 9:01 pm

Hello,

My XP desktop has a bad motherboard so I'm trying to get PT3 setup on my laptop with Windows 7 64 bit. I can't get PT3 running because I can't the postgre service to start. It's set to automatic but doesn't start. If i try to start the service through windows it timeouts, if I try to start it using postgre it brings up a dos window that eventually dissapears with nothing happening. Event Viewer has the following error 2012-11-21 19:49:15 EST LOG: could not create file "postmaster.opts": Permission denied. After seeing this I read I needed to give the postgre account full access to the postgre folder which i've done, but the service still doesn't start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jason

The first thing to do is to reboot - if another service has that file open preventing it from being written then that should sort that out.

If that doesn't help - do you have postmaster.opts in the PostgreSQL\x.y\Data folder? Check that it isn't read-only.
Do you have postmaster.pid in that folder? If so, delete the .pid file.

i reboot and I see pg_ctl.exe running in taskmanager but it goes away. The Postgre service says "starting" and doesn't change.

I do have postmaster.opts and the read only checkbox is not checked. i dont't have postmaster.pid in the folder.

should I try reinstalling postgre?

Yes, that would be my next step. Try reinstalling the same major version of PostgreSQL as you currently have (e.g. 8.3 or 9.0) and it should update the files as necessary.

I reinstalled and still had issues so I went ahead and uninstalled everything, and loaded PT4. Its working as expected. Thanks for your assistance.
