Sufficient Privileges Error

Postby DaTrip1 » Thu May 15, 2008 11:36 pm

I have been trying to install PT 3 for the past couple hours. I did download PostregSQL before for PT2 but had issues installing it then and gave up on it. I followed a thread to uninstall postgres and SQL and thought I did it successfully.

So when I go through the prompts when I downloaded PT3 w/ SQL, it almost completes and then give the error "PostgreSQL failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services." How can I fix this?

Are you on Vista?
Are you running everything as Administrator?

I just tried right clicking on PT3 and running as admin and it still gives me the same error.

Have you tried rebooting your computer, then installing again?

I'm on Vista Sp1 and I also get the same error. I'm also running zonealarm if that helps? but it gives me that error even when i turn zonealarm off to install.

You've both probably got a permissions problem that another piece of software has set on a file folder or a registry key that is stopping the postgres service get going.

Get procmon (from sysinternals), restart the install, when it gets to the error, don't dismiss the dialog box, launch procmon, make a note of the postgres process ID (PID) from windows task manager, filter the procmon to this PID, scroll down to the bottom and look for any folders/registry keys this PID is trying to access.

The path and result columns in procmon should give you the clue as to the offending item...

If it turns out to be the path of a completely different app, this is the culprit that's holding the lock that's preventing postgres from starting - that app needs to be disabled, uninstalled or updated so it does not conflict with the postgres service.
