Another installation problem

Been banging my head against the wall all week, following all advice and still getting the 999-SQL State =IM))2 error and not being able to log on. I uninstall, run the command prompt, I've tried changing to "trust" so password isnt needed and still the same. I found this on another forum, and may have something...

I had fun and games installing PostGreSQL on WinXP but finally sussed it. This is what I did and I hope it will work for you too:


Create a brand new account with Administrative rights e.g. postgres. If that account already exists, even in WinXPHome, go to the Control Panel and remove that user first and then create that new user account
Login as that user and install PostGreSQL making sure that you enter this username account for the Windows domain username - NOTE: this is NOT the internal database administrative account
The installation process will "take" full control of the installed directory and revokes rights to everybody else - that's the bit that screwed up my installation
You shouldn't need to login with that account again, everything could be done via the pgAdmin




Oddly enough, when i tried his advice and attempted to open a new account under the name Postgres, I get a message that this account already exists...but it is not listed in my user accounts so I don't know how to delete it and start fresh. I did once have sqlite on my computer awhile ago, if that makes a difference, but it is long gone. Any help would be appreciated, bit of a computer half wit here.

The "service account" postgres will not be listed under your "users" because it doesnt have logon privileges.

Start->Run, "cmd" -> OK. Type:

[codeps9]net user postgres /DELETE[/codeps9]

This will delete the postgres service account.

Try reinstalling then show me a screenshot of where it is failing.
