cannot access old database. How do I get to it?

Postby roguephoenix » Wed Jul 02, 2008 10:46 pm

I have built out a new computer, just before my old one died. My old computer had a fairly decent PT3 database on it, with most of my online playing history. My new computer has a small amount of hand history.

I would like to know how to get the data off the old hard drive and onto the new computer's database. I have searched and looked for a clue as to how to get the data, or where the data lives, or in what format. it seems many people have had the same question without getting a straight answer.

For the moment I have my old eide hard drives hooked up to my new computer. I would like to get the data off the old hard drives so I can disconnect them. I am not familliar with postgere sql but I do know the old reg entires, data paths, etc are gone because the old hard drive has a different drive letter than the new one, plus the OS has a completely different install of postgere and a completely different registry.

Is there a how-to posted somewhere? I don't need an "easy" method, just "a" method. Some tips about how postgere works along the way wouldn't hurt because I'm curious. For starters, which directories to copy off my old hard drive so I can format it would be a great start.

Thanks,

postgres stores your databases across multiple files and folders so there is no simple method by just copying files.
Since you have 'lost' the postgres installation on that old drive, we'll have to hope one of the postgres experts has a way of recovering those old DBs.
Of course, the completely unhelpful answer is to always keep a backup of your databases and/or hand history files.

the simplest way for you is not to try and move postgres or the old db... you can't just copy a load of folders en-bloc btw...

if you've retained the processed hh's on the old db; you can manually import these to the new db - NB - this won't bring back any manually entered tournie summaries btw...

we could use the native postgres command lines to dump & restore, but it's going to be an involved process i think, as you appear to have the old db drive connected to the new system and only one [new] instance of postgres...

i take it the old system has died completely such that you couldn't connect back up the old drive to it and fire it up for a while?

if you want to go through the dump & restore route, PM me and i'll meet you online in messenger or skype and take you through it...

Correct, the old motherboard died, and the old system is inaccessible.

if you are missing a significant number, you could try connecting to the d:\ db and using the pt export, then connect back to c and import - using the pt database functions...

take a backup via the method i showed you, just in case... ;)
