database error when opening pt

i compressed my database lastnight and then today when i went to open pt again after a scheduled system restart i got this error msg:

unable to connect to the database

101 - SQLSTATE = 08001
server closed the connection unexpectedly
this probably means the server terminated abnormally
before or while processing the request

This error means PostgreSQL isn't running.

Go to the c:\program files\postgresql\8.2\data folder. Is there a file called postmaster.pid there? If so, delete it and restart the computer and see if it works again.
