PT Excruciatingly Slow: Anyway to Speed It Up?

Postby TomBrooklyn » Sat Nov 29, 2008 9:09 pm

Is there anyway I can speed up PT short of starting a new database or getting a new computer? I do the One Step Compact regularly.

When I use my most recent hold'em database which has about 295,000 hands, PT runs excruciatingly slow. The database is in the Access style, not the PSL. My computer is a Dell Intel Pentium 4 3Ghz HT with 4Gig Ram.

It takes literally about fifteen mintutes for the program to find all hands from all dates. It takes about 10 minutes to switch to a different tab, such as going from Session tab to General or Position Stats or Misc Stats. It virtually locks up my computer every time I do so by requiring 100% of my CPU power during these times.

You shouldn't be having it retrieve your entire database each time. Use the date filters on the Preferences tab to limit the amount of data that gets retrieved. If you want to see all stats for all times then there isn't anyway to make it faster.

Hi Pat,

I use the date filters most of the time, so it's not an issue with that. It's when I wan't to review stats for various hands and positions and the larger the database the better that it's a problem.

Does the PSL (PSQ?) database make things any faster?

Would a new computer with one of those Core Duo or Quad Core cpus allow the computer to keep running other things while PT worked on a big database? Right now, my pentium 4 virtually locks up while PT is calculating.

Cheers.

This is what you said in the original message. Now you are saying you use the date filters. So which is it? Even using the filters, if PT has to retrieve 1/2 of the database of 300k hands that's still going to be slow.

PostgreSQL or a faster PC may be a bit faster, but I doubt it will help much. It's just not that fast retrieving a ton of data.
