I don't know what is causing this. I search the old forums and found just this...

the guy said it was his McAfee AV program that was causing this error.

I do think my Firewall/AV may have caused the problem, because I had used SQL for over a year previously. When I disable them though, I am still getting the same messages. I'll try again and if I find anything I will post it here.

If not, I am considering a new pc, in which case I'll reinstall and use a different firewall/AV - I'll probably then move to PT3 at that point (once support is available for Absolute, which hopefully isn't too far away?)

Thanks for your help Pat - it does seem as if something has been corrupted, as I have now had 2 or 3 error messages for other applications which I have not encountered before, so it may well be an issue with my pc now.

could someone help here. I get this same error message after I installed servicew pack 1 to my windows vista ... I tryed the tricks mentioned above but doesnt work...

WHAT TO DO ?

Did you delete the postmaster.pid file?
What happens when you try to start the service from the Admin Tools > Services window? What error do you get?
When did you backup the database last?
