Postgress user permissions

Had a power supply problem on XP-home lappy and on reboot it did a check disc and ran through some sort of user permissions thing. PC then started ok, except PT2 will not run as it could not connect to postgress database. Looking at running tasks and can see postgress has not loaded.

Opened a dos window and tried running the executable manually :-

C:\>"C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.2\bin\postgres.exe"

and got the following result :-

Execution of PostgreSQL by a user with administrative permissions is not
permitted.
The server must be started under an unprivileged user ID to prevent
possible system security compromises. See the documentation for
more information on how to properly start the server.

Arrgghhh I am the only user and it used to work prior to the disc check - anyone got any ideas ?
Thanks in advance - Pete

What email was used to purchase PT2? I have no record of this email used for the site/forum.

Go to the Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services window.
Find PostgreSQL in the list.
Right-click on it and select "Start" from the popup menu.
What happens when you do this?

Thanks pat, a progress bar ran for a minute or so and at the end there waqs a dialog saying

The postgresql database server 8,2 service on local computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do for example the performance logs and alerts sevice ---- Okay ----

In the services page (prior to hitting start), the postgresql database has startup type set as "automatic" and logon is set as ./postgres

After closing the dialog postgress is not running (checked with task manager) and PT does not run .....

Go to the c:\program files\postgresql\8.2\data folder. Is there a file called postmaster.pid there? If so, delete it and then try to start the service again.
